RED BULL AIR RACE INDIANAPOLIS, RACE DAY

Race day in Indianapolis was a one of many emotions for Team Chambliss. It started with a nail-biting Round of 14 against Pete McLeod. Kirby was first to fly and completed a penalty-free run in 1:05:045. It wasn’t the fastest time we’d seen all week, but we hoped it would be enough! As Pete navigated between gates, we watched as his sector times turned green. Just prior to crossing the finish line, a 2-second penalty for an incorrect level appeared on the screen! In the final seconds of his run, we went from expecting our day to be over to going through to the Round of 8. Excitement filled the hangar and we rushed to greet Kirby with the news! But as we prepared for the next round, we received information that we had been disqualified.

“There is an RPM limit of 2950 allowed during the race. Unfortunately for us, our RPM was slightly over for a few seconds on takeoff and that’s what caused the disqualification. It was a huge surprise to our team. There’s nothing inside the cockpit that I can see to know if our RPM is over or under, so from my point of view I thought we were good to go. To say our team is disappointed would be the understatement of the year.”

Matthias Dolderer went on to place first and confirmed his first Red Bull Air Race World Championship title with one race left in the season. Nigel Lamb of Great Britain followed in second, and Pete McLeod finished third.
