RED BULL AIR RACE KAZAN: QUALIFYING

Kirby Chambliss (USA)

Kirby mentioned the track here in Kazan could get mighty interesting if the winds picked up, and today’s practice session didn’t disappoint. Between all masters, 69 seconds in penalties were incurred, including many pylon hits and incorrect levels. Moving into qualifying, the pilot that could produce clean runs would have the biggest advantage.

“I was fairly conservative in my first run. My goal was to produce a clean, decent time that would allow me to push the boundaries and improve my time for the second run. I was really happy with a time of 56.703 seconds, but it seems like we still need to run at least a half of a second faster,” remarks Kirby.

Paulo provides some insight on where we might find that time. “In order to get faster, we need to improve between gates 6 and 7. Pete [McLeod], who won qualifying with a time of 54.562 seconds, came in with a new strategy between gates 3 and 4. If he is able to repeat this tomorrow, we will have a little more work to do in order to repeat our Budapest win.”

With a fourth-place finish for the team, tomorrow’s head to head pairings for the Round of 14 are as follows:

  • Heat 1: Juan Velarde v. Michael Goulian
  • Heat 2: Matthias Dolderer v. Kirby Chambliss
  • Heat 3: Yoshihide Muroya v. Matt Hall
  • Heat 4: Christian Bolton v. Nicolas Ivanoff
  • Heat 5: Peter Podlunsek v. Petr Kopfstein
  • Heat 6: Francois Le Vot v. Martin Sonka
  • Heat 7: Mikael Brageot v. Pete McLeod
