The day ended much earlier than the team had hoped when Kirby took second to Hungarian favorite, Peter Besenyei, in the first head-to-head match in the Round of 14. A two-second penalty for “climbing in the gate” put him 2.316 seconds behind Besenyei who had a time of 1:01:070. Kirby’s time of 1:03:386 put him in tenth position overall.
“It’s not the direction I wanted to go after the progress made in qualifying yesterday, but now it’s time to focus on the next race and flying fast and clean,” says Kirby.
